Moonlight Roast has roots that go back hundreds of years. Long before modern cafés became quick stop-and-go businesses, coffee houses were places built around conversation, music, creativity, and community.

The earliest coffee houses appeared in the Middle East during the 15th and 16th centuries, especially in cities like Istanbul and Cairo. They became gathering places where people would share ideas, listen to music, play games, discuss politics, and spend hours together over coffee. When coffee houses spread into Europe in the 1600s, they evolved into what many called “penny universities” — places where ordinary people could exchange ideas, hear news, debate philosophy, and experience culture for the cost of a cup of coffee.

By the mid-20th century, especially during the folk music movement of the 1950s and 1960s, coffee houses in America took on another identity. Small cafés became homes for songwriters, poets, storytellers, and open mic performers. Unlike bars, the focus was less on alcohol and more on listening, connection, and artistic expression. These spaces gave emerging musicians a stage, encouraged conversation between strangers, and created an atmosphere where people felt welcome to linger rather than rush out the door.

Modern cafés often shifted toward speed, convenience, and high customer turnover, but many people still crave the older style of coffee house — a “third place” between home and work where they can relax, connect, and feel part of something local and human.
